Care for your board

Each unique board should receive the same level of care to guarantee they will be used, chopped on and appreciated for many years to come.

Make sure to look after your board. Regularly use a food-safe oil to polish your board. You will soon be able to buy our own locally sourced and produced raw cold-pressed linseed oil.

1.
Clean your handmade cutting boards after each use by hand with a little soap and hot water.

2.
Never put your cuttingboard in a dishwasher.

3.
White vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or lemon can be used to disinfect and remove harsh odors.

4.
Do not leave your wood cutting board in standing water. This can cause the board to split.

5.
Store your handcrafted cutting boards in a clean, dry place.

6.
Always allow board to dry separately.

7.
Do not stack your handmade wood cutting board with other boards or kitchen utensils when drying.

8.
Use a food-safe oil to polish your board once a month. This will help maintain an attractive finish, prevent cracking, and seal the grain against bacteria and the penetration of moisture.

9.
We recommend using our own SMEDJAN Board Balm but if you dont have it at hand you can use flax seed oil, walnut oil, butcher block oil or beeswax. Try to avoid vegetable oils as they tend to become rancid rapidly.

10.
Warm the oil slightly before applying. Rub the oil with a lint-free cloth in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the oil to soak in between each of the four or five coats required. Wait about four to six hours and then wipe off the excess oil that did not soak in all the way.
